Outsourcing Retouching as a Photographer: When It Pays Off

Retouching your own photos feels free, but your time has a price. Here is a simple way to count it, with an example, and when it is smarter to keep it yourself.

Outsourcing Retouching as a Photographer: When It Pays Off

The real cost of doing it yourself

Retouching your own work feels free because there is no invoice. But the hours are real. Every hour in Photoshop is an hour you are not shooting, answering clients, marketing or resting.

The question is not whether outsourcing costs money. It is whether your hours are worth more on something else.

The simple math

Count the minutes you spend per image on average, including revisions. Multiply by the value of an hour of your time, which you can estimate from what you earn for shooting or what you would charge for it. That is your cost per image.

Compare it with the per-image price of a retoucher, plus any extras you would need. If your time cost is higher, outsourcing saves money. If it is lower, doing it yourself is cheaper, at least in cash terms.

A worked example

This is an illustration with made-up numbers, so replace them with yours. Say you spend 25 minutes per portrait and value your hour at $120. That is about $50 of your time per image. If a retoucher charges $50 per image, the cash cost is similar, but you get those 25 minutes back for every image.

Across 40 images, that is about 17 hours returned to you, which you can spend on shoots, clients or a day off.

When to keep it in-house

Keep it yourself if you only shoot a few images a month, if the retouching is part of your signature style, or if you simply enjoy it. Keep the hero images for your portfolio if they define your look.

A common middle path is to retouch your favorite work yourself and outsource the volume.

How to start small

Start with one session. Send ten images with a clear brief and compare the result with how you would have done it. Give feedback on the first round and see how well it is applied.

If it saves you time and the quality holds, you can send more. If not, you spent very little to find out.
