What AI retouching does well
AI tools are fast, cheap and always available. For quick social posts, simple background removal and light cleanup, they can be good enough, and there is no reason to pretend otherwise.
The question is not whether AI is useful. It is what you are giving up when the image matters.
Where AI falls short
Skin is the clearest case. Many AI tools guess what skin should look like, either by blurring or by inventing a smooth texture. The result can look plastic, and in some tools it can change the shape of a face or the eyes.
Products are the second case. AI can change letter spacing, round sharp edges and warp logos or small text. It can also shift colors, so the product on screen no longer matches the product in the box.
Control and privacy are the third. With an automatic tool you accept what it produces, and you may not know where your photos go. Images made with generative tools can also have an unclear copyright position, which matters for brands.
Task by task
This is how the two approaches usually compare.
| Task | AI tools | Human retoucher |
|---|---|---|
| Natural skin | Fast, but can blur pores or invent texture | Light and shadow adjusted by hand, pores and freckles kept |
| Logos and small text | Can distort letters and trademarks | Left sharp and unchanged |
| Color accuracy | Can drift from your reference | Matched to your swatches or Pantone references |
| Reflections on glass and metal | Often produces smudges instead of clean highlights | Highlights rebuilt by hand |
| Changes you ask for | Hit or miss | Revisions included |
| Privacy | Depends on the tool and its terms | Files stay with the studio, NDA available |
How to run your own fair test
Do not take our word for it. Pick three of your own images: a close-up portrait, a product with a logo, and a garment with fabric texture. Send the same original files to an AI tool and to a human retoucher, with the same written brief.
Compare the results at 100% zoom and at the size you will actually publish. Check the pores and fine hair, the logo and small text, the colors against the real product, and whether the person still looks like themselves.
How we work
At LightHouse Retouch every image is retouched by hand by a senior retoucher. We do not use AI skin-smoothing filters or generative edits that change a face or a product. Your files are never used to train AI.
If AI is right for your job, that is fine. If the image is for a client, a campaign or your name, it is worth testing the alternative.
